Cueva de los Verdes: inside a volcanic tunnel

We’ve already seen in the previous articles that Lanzarote is a volcanic island, characterized by many craters and volcanic rocks. The island’s landscape is not the only part to have these characteristics, but its undergrounds too: Cueva de los Verdes is the proof.

Cueva de los Verdes is a cave formed in the volcanic underground due to various eruptive activities of the volcano Corona.
We are in the north east of Lanzarote, where volcano Corona is the main protagonist of the northern landscapes: it’s the highest volcano of the island, with its 609 meters high.

Cueva de los Verdes extends into a tunnel of several kilometers, starting from the Corona volcano and reaching the coast. Its interior is of a disarming charm: crossing the tunnels you feel as if you have been swallowed up in the center of the Earth.

Between 1500 and 1600 this cave was used by the population to hide from pirates coming from the African coasts. Only later, after 1800, this cave started to become the subject of studies and an obligatory stop for travelers and scientists enchanted by this incredible volcanic formation.

During the last century, César Manrique and Jesus Soto, a native artist of Fuerteventura, worked together to ensure that this enchanting creation of nature was accessible to visitors who wanted to discover the secrets of this magical place.
